FormatComputer-based, fixed-form (not adaptive); at Prometric test centers only — no at-home option. Four sections with optional scheduled breaks between each section. Total seated time approximately 7 hours 30 minutes (includes tutorial, void option, breaks). Section order is fixed: CPBS, CARS, BBFL, PSBF. Void option: candidate may void all scores at the end of the exam at no cost; voided scores are not reported.

ID RequirementsOne government-issued, unexpired photo ID required (e.g., driver's license, passport). Name on ID must exactly match name on AAMC registration. A second acceptable form of ID is recommended as backup. Biometric data (fingerprint or palm vein scan) collected at some Prometric centers.
RenewalNot required -- MCAT scores are not certifications requiring renewal. Most medical schools accept MCAT scores up to 3 years old at the time of matriculation; some schools accept scores up to 2 years old, and some up to 5 years old. Verify score acceptance windows directly with each medical school. Candidates may retake the MCAT within lifetime attempt limits to obtain higher or more recent scores.
Retake PolicyUp to 3 MCAT attempts per testing year (Jan 1–Dec 31). Up to 4 attempts in any 2 consecutive testing years. Maximum 7 lifetime attempts. All non-voided scores are reported to schools (no score selection). Score release is approximately 30-35 days after the test date. Scores from voided exams or no-shows are not reported.
