ID RequirementsTwo forms of ID required. Primary: valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID (passport strongly recommended internationally). Secondary: any ID with name. Name must match USMLE registration exactly.
RenewalNot required -- USMLE scores do not expire for licensure purposes, though some state medical boards and residency programs may have time limits on Step scores.
PrerequisitesMust have passed Step 1 and Step 2 CK; must hold MD or DO degree (or equivalent); Some states require completion of at least one year of post-graduate (residency) training to be eligible for Step 3 (recommended)
Retake PolicyMust wait at least 60 days before retaking the same Step exam. Maximum 3 attempts per 12-month period. Maximum 6 total attempts per Step. Full fee required for each retake.
